Course: Teaching English to Young Learners

Some people believe that it is easy to teach children because they only want to play, it is true that they love to play but they also love to learn and teaching English to them is a very good combination of fun and knowledge. This is a methodology course for teachers who prepare candidates for Cambridge Young Learners examinations. Classes are hands-on and resources and tips are provided. 

 

 With a world changing so quickly in terms of technology, climate and- these days- health safety, our students, particularly teens, will need more than intellectual subject knowledge. They have lost their social peers near them and they cannot do regular “teen” things like sports, clubs, cinemas, they also  had to learn to adapt to a new kind of instructional format. How can we teachers help our students to acquire and develop skills for them to thrive in this context?

 Life competencies are now an integral part of education; our students need to develop emotional reasoning and critical thinking but we also need to know how they feel, what they want and how to face the future. We´ll try to provide some insights into this in this academic event.

Getting Ready for the Future

 Worldwide, lives are stressed and strained by COVID-19. The toll of the virus, isolation, increased workloads and other associated effects are rising among many students and teachers. Social and Emotional Learning is as important as any other curriculum subject and not only for our students but for teachers as well and so is wellbeing, soft skills for the future.

This time of year can be a good moment to check out how you’re feeling after 2020, a very different educational experience. In this event, we’ll look at ways that you can help yourself and, in turn, help your learners to achieve wellbeing and keep our mental health.

While preparing my sessions for the VIII Summer Course, I came across this tool which I think is very useful for students to use to practise their language.

 

Digital Portfolios Seminar to support children in need

Digital portfolios provide students with a nice way to show examples of their best work and the process of developing that work. In this event we will develop this issue and will also present some tools for creating digital portfolios.

All the proceeds will be used to organize a Christmas celebration for the children of El Paraíso, a community in Villa María del Triunfo and a community kitchen in AAHH Saúl Cantoral in San Juan de Lurigancho.

Remote learning has turned now into online learning so the need for immediate support has been met. We feel very proud of all the teachers who joined us in these courses trying to improve their delivery. Well done!!

Summary of VII Summer Blended learning Course

Dear CTS friends and family

We are going through difficult times where reaching the end of the tunnel is everybody´s responsibility so we need to abide by the rules and stay home.

In these times of lockdown, we teachers have even more responsibilities than before since we are expected to help our students learn in a virtual context they are not so familiar with because they use it more for entertainment and pleasure.

We need to prepare online teaching material that is – of course- different from the material we use for face-to-face lessons and we also need to use platforms and tools we are not so familiar with and with little time to master their use.

We know that little by little we will gain more skills at doing this and will manage to reduce preparation time while mastering the use of the Internet tools. It is at times like this when approaches such as Gamification , Flipped Learning, ICT and Web tools  can help us pass on knowledge, consolidate or even assess it.

At CTS we feel we have contributed  to support our teachers by having chosen the above approaches as modules for our last summer course both in its face-to-face as well as online modality. 

We are committed to keeping on offering practical courses and workshops (online modality) about tools and strategies for online context not only for teachers of English but for teachers of any subject. Thus, we can help our teachers in their virtual teaching practice until the time comes for meeting our students face to face without any health risk.

XXII CTS Academic Event

The beginning of the new year is traditionally a popular time to tackle difficult tasks such as losing weight, or fulfilling worldly ambitions. But the transition from year to year can also be an opportune occasion to pursue emotional, spiritual, and intellectual growth. Towards this end Customized Training Services has prepared a series of events that involve learning new skills to support our professional development as well as to support students with learning difficulties. This XXII event is the first of them.

XIV CTS Academic Facebook Event

On February 17th we ran our XIV CTS Academic Facebook event on Back to School: What to do the First Day of Classes. Along the workshops we invited  some of the teachers to try some of the ideas presented in the event and share their experience with us.... and so they did. It is absolutely rewarding to know that CTS helps colleagues introduce variety in their teaching practice.

Developing Soft skills

Topic:  Developing time management skills

For every teacher, time is an important resource since we usually feel that it is not possible to achieve what we need because there is far too much work for the number of hours in a day. As teachers we need to balance the long-term goals with the immediate needs of our students besides all the additional work that comes along: writing lesson plans, grading exams and filling grade sheets, parents´ meetings, etc.

For all these reasons we need effective time management skills, to increase our productivity and provide a better education for our students. Join us in this workshop to help each other manage the situation.

Presenter:

Maria Luisa Mu is the Academic Director of CTS. She was the General Coordinator of the Language Department at USIL and is a certified teacher trainer with ample experience teaching Business in England, Spain, Chile and Peru where she participated in the organization of the English for Business Programme at ESAN and Universidad del Pacífico. She has also taught ESP at UNDP, FAO, OIT and UNESCO.

Maria Luisa is an educator who holds a Master in English Language Teaching from the University of Sheffield, England and has Post-Graduate Degrees (Diplomado de Segunda Especialidad) in Educational Management (PUCP), Information Technology (USIL), Curriculum Design for Distance Learning Courses (PUCP), Negotiation and Conflict Resolution (PUCP) and Teacher Training (UPCH).

She was the tutor of the blended-learning Master Degree course in TEFL from Universidad de Piura / FUNIBER and is currently one of their thesis advisors besides being a Speaking Examiner from Cambridge University from YLEs to CPE.

Topic:  Developing Self-Confidence: Helping Student’s Overcome their Fear

 In order to help our students achieve their best, we must understand what obstacles they are struggling with. In many cases, the limiting factor in a student’s progress is not a lack of ability or willingness to put in the work, but rather a lack of self-confidence. By helping students shake their fears and self-consciousness, we can encourage them to reach their full potential and share their knowledge and opinions with others.

Presenter:

Laura Marsh is a teacher from the United States who is currently working as Director of the Language Center at Antonio Ruiz de Montoya University and teaching specialized English classes to scholarship students focused on developing identity and professional and leadership skills. She holds a B.A. in Archaeology and an M.A. in Anthropology from Stanford University, and her studies focused on the societies of the Andes. Her ELT experience includes teaching one-to-one academic English classes to foreign graduate students at Stanford and teaching recent immigrants entering into an English-speaking public high school in California. She has also designed and taught various anthropology, archaeology, and cultural heritage courses at the university level.

 X CTS Academic Facebook Event

I love CTS Academic Facebook events. It is a time to meet old friends some of them have been attending these events since 2014. Their loyalty and perseverance really moves me and obliges me to search for the latest trends in the topics they request. 

This year we want to do things even better and that is why we have requested other lecturers in order to expand ideas and provide different backgrounds and points of view.

This first workshop of the year  was special because the  lecturer is a very good friend of mine who has specialized in Neuroscience and we could make the connection between Neuroscience and Education. 

We are looking forward to knowing more and more about this interesting and useful topic.

If you are looking for a jump-start to your new year, here are six courses we are featuring this month to help you out.

1. Third Summer Course for Top English Language Teachers 2016

From Jan 18 - Jan 30 Mondays to Fridays from 09:00 - 13:00

This is a modular course and as in the two preceding courses we offer modules according to participants´requests. This year the modules are:

• Creativity and Innovation in the Language Classroom
• Pronunciation and Grammar develoment from Pre-Intermediate to Advanced
• Teaching CLIL and Teaching Young Learners
• Using TICS, Leadership and Team work techniques for the Classroom
• Improving the Fours Skills using learning strategies 

2. Developing Conversational Skills

From Jan 11 to Jan 27, Mondays and Wednesdays from 17:00 to 20:00

This course has been developed especially for those professionals who want to both develop better listening and teaching skills themselves and who wish to convey those skills to their students. Each session is led by a native English teacher and will include various fun and challenging activities that are designed to identify deficits of current listening and speaking skills.

3. Improving Writing Skills

From Jan 12 to Jan 28, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 17:00 to 20:00

This is the course for all those who need to improve their writing skills under the concept of writing as a cognitive process. You will learn how to develop different kinds of texts with particular emphasis to the organization, layout, editing and proof reading of academic texts.

4. Cambridge English: First (FCE)

From Jan 12 to March 10, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 17:00 to 21:00 and Saturdays from 9:00 to 13:00.

 A comprehensive preparation course to take the exam in March and have the possibility to thoroughly prepare without the constraints of lack of time due to working responsibilities. 

5. TKT CLIL : Preparation Course for this Specialisation exam from Jan 13 to February 26. Wednesdays from 15:00 to 17:00

6. TKT Young Learners: Preparation course for this Specialisation exam from Jan 13 to February 24 from 17:30 - 19:00

Let´s begin the year investing time and effort in our own professional development. Check out what you can do this summer.

Last Saturday´s Facebook event was-once again- a success, not only because of the audience but mostly because of the quality of the audience. The topic of this presentation was thinking skills and it was really good to see so many teachers participating, expressing opinions and trying to make the most of their time in the sessions.

 

It felt as if we were among a group of friends exchanging ideas about what we think we should do to improve the quality of thinking in both our students and our fellow colleagues.

 

Once again, we have to thank NUTESA for hosting the event and providing the cozy atmosphere, the break and some of the presents for the raffle.

 

All these factors made me leave the event with a warm feeling in my heart. Our teachers are keen on working on their professional development and they do believe in lifelong training.

 

In CTS we feel obliged to continue working hard to reach the hard standards Peruvian education should reach and so we will.

This TKT CLIL Preparation course is for all those who teach or intend to teach school subjects in English. It provides comprehensive input on the methodology and practice of CLIL (Content Language Integrated Learning).

The course runs from August 27th to October 10th on Saturdays from 10 to 1 p.m. and  the units are divided into two modules:

Module 1: Knowledge and Principles of CLIL and

Module 2: Lesson Planning, Delivery and Assessment.

Teachers learn to use model language, evaluate language challenges in the classroom, develop enquiry-based learning and improve assessment methods and feedback.

The course includes materials for both face-to-face and online sessions, tutorials, sample tests, mock exam and the registration for the official TKT CLIL Cambridge Examination.
